“The biblical city of Babel and its infamous tower have received bad press over the centuries. Imagined as a looming structure built by children in which all residents spoke the same language, the omnipresent God decided to trick humans in order to make them scatter — the word Babel is derived from the Hebrew balal [to jumble]. Yet if we consider the tower as a prototype radio transmitter, as Marseille, Francebased Watcha Clan does on its latest album, the sound of one world singing and dancing together makes perfect sense.

Watcha Clan has always exhibited a visionary spiritual eclecticism in its sound, stretching from Gnawa trance and drum n bass to hip-hop, Balkan brass and Sephardic folk, with thriving bass-heavy pulsations countered by Sista K’s show-stopping vocals. “Diaspora Hi-Fi was more a travel through my background and roots, she says. “Now my obsession is the wall, both concrete and abstract.” Radio Babel is predominantly concerned with destroying boundaries everywhere.

Whatever sound these nomadic souls travel through, you can be certain that Watcha Clan will accomplish what great artists do : highlight the similarities between cultures through music, instead of complaining about the differences. To hear the sound of one world united by music, join the movement on Radio Babel.” – Derek Beres

Trouble Worldwide & Barbès Records present…

…a diverse showcase of how local is the new global

Tradition can make plenty of trouble, as this year’s artists prove: Human beat boxes boom and bap next to Quebec-style kitchen clogging. Roots-driven hardcore vallenato from Colombia’s Caribbean coast (via L.A.’s hot clubs) sways boldly along side a cabaret singer with a Brechtian pedigree and a cache of classic Romanian Gypsy songs. The gentle pulse of Madagascar bumps up against cascades of hard-hitting Indian beats.

8pm: Sanda Weigl

Singing songs she learned as a child with effortless flair (she has family ties to Bertolt Brecht and long career in German theater, after all), Sanda Weigl creates a fresh approach—right down to her all-Japanese band—to Romanian Gypsy gems thanks to her polished yet vulnerable voice.

“…a Tom Waits-bred cross between Cape Verdean Chanteuse Cesaria Evora and German vocal visionary Dagmar Krause …” –San Diego Union-Tribune
http://www.sandaweigl.com/

8:45pm: Razia (Cumbancha Records)

Singer and songwriter Razia Said’s nomadic life has taken her across Africa to France, Italy, Ibiza, Bali and New York City, but despite these wanderings, her heart and soul remains inexorably tethered to Madagascar, the land of her birth. With a jazz-inflected grace reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Razia calls for more awareness and action to save the unique natural environment of her island home.

9:30pm: International Body Music Festival Sampler

Music you can see, dance you can hear. Evocative and visceral, the International Body Music Festival concert explores the sonic possibilities of the human instrument with an amazing roster of artists from the Americas, including legendary beatboxers, contemporary takes on Quebecois kitchen clogging, and modern remixes of African American traditions like hambone.

10:15pm: A super cool special guest

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, This singer-songwriter is a unique indie-pop blend of american folk and old jamaican rocksteady, with a vintage 50’s feel.

11pm: Very be Careful

A Caribbean soul and a California heart have sustained a decade of ceaseless romp-downs and raucous times for L.A.’s vallenato veteranos Very Be Careful, inciting 10s of 1000s of men, women, children, and even some wild animals, to boogie to the Colombian coastal beat.

11:45pm: Non Stop Bhangra

Imagine a scene from a Bollywood movie smack in the middle of a thumping nightclub—swirling colors, the rhythm of pounding feet, and the relentless energy of brilliant beats. Add some dancehall vocals and serious live percussion, and you have the Bay Area’s wildly popular answer to India’s high-energy bhangra.

With over 700 proposals to squeeze into a mere three dozen showcases slots, the WOMEX Jury’s chose Chicha Libre as one of the artists to showcase in Copenhagen this year.

Chicha Libre plays a mixture of latin rhythms, surf music and psychedelic pop inspired by Peruvian music from the Amazon. The Brooklyn-based band mixes up covers of forgotten Chicha classics with French-tinged originals, re-interpretation of 70’s pop classics as well as cumbia versions of pieces by Satie and Ravel.

Chicha is the name of a corn-based liquor favored by the Incas in pre-colombian days. Chicha is also the name of a South American music craze which started out in the early 70’s in the Peruvian Amazon. Cumbias amazonicas, as they were first called, were loosely inspired by Colombian accordion-driven cumbias but soon incorporated the distinctive sounds of Andean melodies, some Cuban son, and the psychedelic sounds of surf guitars, farfisa organs and moog synthesizers.

See you in Copenhagen!

The Brazilian band Pato Fu has always taken this question seriously and has always taken risks. This time the question was: what if we recorded a whole album playing only toy musical instruments? Not an album with music for kids, but one with ‘regular’ music flavored with the sound of the toys.
The record Toy Music is coming out in the end of July. But for now you can enjoy this really cool version of Paul McCartney’s “Live And Let Die”.

Likely the first music – people the world over stomp, clap, sing, snap and chant – music you can see, dance you can hear. The first gathering of it’s kind, The International Body Music Festival Concert is an evocative and visceral performance of traditional and contemporary artists exploring the sonic possibilities of the human instrument. The IBMF was founded by Keith Terry and produced in the Bay Area by Crosspulse, an Oakland, California arts organization.

The Third IBMF is November, 2010 in São Paulo, Brazil, hosted by Barbatuques, directed by Fernando Barba.

“Simply good pop/rock and reggae songs with enough exoticism and class to stand out from the crowd.” – Allmusic.com

“A vibrant, bubbly mix of reggae, funk, hip-hop, even raï…it’s quite catchy!” – Pop Matters

“Reggae, but not quite like any reggae you’ve heard before (although some of Manu Chao’s music comes close).
Relentlessly upbeat, totally cool.” – Boston Herald

MAY 2010 – Based in the high Andean mountains of Quito Ecuador, Sarazino is the brainchild of Lamine Fellah, a musician, songwriter and producer whose nomadic life is reflected in the multicultural influences in his songs. Fellah is a true child of a globalized world and Sarazino’s music draws on reggae, Latin and African grooves, Arabic music and catchy, international pop to create an upbeat celebration of the diverse world we all share.

This summer, Sarazino tours North America for the first time, performing at celebrated venues including San Francisco’s Stern Grove Festival, the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and Montreal’s Nuits d’Afrique as well as sharing bills with superstars such as Mos Def, Angélique Kidjo and the Skatalites.

Born in Constantine, Algeria, Fellah’s father was a diplomat who brought the family to live in Spain and Switzerland as well as the African countries of Burundi and Burkina Faso. The young Fellah was inspired by the music that surrounded him, from Spanish flamenco and North African raï, to Afrobeat and roots reggae. Fellah moved to Montreal for college and made the musically active Canadian city his home for fifteen years. His global travels eventually led him to Quito, Ecuador where he fell in love with Latin America and its music and decided to settle there to focus on recording and producing.

Ya Foy! (which means “no problem” in the Dioula language of West Africa), the acclaimed album that was released last year on Cumbancha Discovery, includes guest appearances by Jamaican reggae legend Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals fame, as well as toaster Blanquito Man from the Latin ska/rock band King Chango. With a mix of African vocals, jamming electric guitar riffs, dancehall shout outs and fun, funky reggae Sarazino’s musical mélange is a savory stew of catchy, upbeat songs that offer a soundtrack for a true world party.

Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda brings together some of the best musicians of Pernambuco, – a state already known for its colorful rhythms and innovative music pioneers like Alceu Valença, Nana Vasconcelos and Chico Science – who were not satisfied with the traditional bass-drums-guitar formation – and decided to recruit members of the regions high energy Frevo orchestras to mix into their brew of Latin grooves, Afro beats and the rhythms of Pernambuco. Orquestra has built its own concise identity and a huge following in only a couple of years. While touring throughout Brazil the band recorded its first album, released in 2008 and distributed by Som Livre, the country’s largest label. Hailed by the Brazilian press for their incredible live energy, music critic Ben Ratliff of The New York Times also took notice, as did the Latin Grammy Awards, who nominated them for Best Tropical Brazilian Roots Album for 2009. Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda now embarks on their US debut tour in March, which includes SXSW in Austin, Lincoln Center and also the Heineken TransAtlantic Festival in Miami Beach.
